Who is King?

“But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, ‘Give us a king to judge us.’ So Samuel prayed to the Lord. And the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them.” 1 Samuel 8:6-7

Samuel had aged in years and his sons were not walking in his ways. The people were demanding a king just like the surrounding nations. It seems at times people want what someone else has instead of being content with what they have been given. They had the God of the universe as their King. You can clearly see that they rejected Him. But God being the perfect One that He is said, let them have what they want.

One of the morsels that I want to take away from our verses today is that when I go in God’s name to do His work, the people are not rejecting me, they are rejecting Him. I tend to take things personally and feel like everything that happens is my fault somehow. How ridiculous of me. I am not in control. How can everything possibly be my fault? People choose their own way in life. I am not responsible for others’ choices. Only my own.

It’s easy to sit back and say, “What’s wrong with those people? They’ve seen what God has done for them. Why would they want anyone else to reign over them?” What about you friend? How have you rejected God as King in your life? Has He called you to something incredulous and you aren’t believing He will come through? Do you go to someone else in your life when you have crisis or triumph? One wise preacher said, “Wherever you spend your time, talent and money, that’s where your heart is. Just look at your checkbook and that will tell you where it is.” Ouch, that one still has sting to it.

God had brought them out of Egypt and over and again they had strayed from His commands. Each time I would imagine was a blow to the Holy One. He longs for us to be right with Him, meaning He is first in everything.  He knows that this is for our ultimate good since He created us and knows every single hair on our heads. But we stray. We go our own way. He clearly says left and we veer right and wonder why we have run into so many problems.

Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus! Don’t reject Him as King! Walk this way with Him! The peace and blessings are incomparable. It is oft the road less traveled my friend. There may be twists and turns up ahead. But walking with Jesus through them makes your faith stronger and boosts your confidence in your calling. You will never go wrong with Jesus as King of your life. Never.

Who is the King of your heart? Your kids? Your husband? Your job? Your parents? Your friends? Your Pastor? Your Sunday School teacher? Who have you made king? Have you asked God for someone else to govern over your life but Him? Maybe that wasn’t your intention but it happened anyway. God goes on in this Chapter to tell Samuel to warn the people about this king they have asked for. I would say He is sending a warning to you today about who is king in your life.

It’s so simple to ask Him to be back on the throne of your heart where He belongs. Just talk to Him. He is approachable. Seek His forgiveness and ask Him now to guide your steps. Our days are numbered. When your number comes up, there will be no more time to make things right. Please don’t let any more time pass. You won’t regret a single moment of Jesus being the King of your heart. Your circumstances may change and get sticky but God never changes. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. He will never fail you.

Something New

“Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” Isaiah 43:19

I’ve been doing some painting. Long overdue painting. Each wall that is completed, I stand back and remember how it was and admire the way it is now. I’ve been wondering to myself, “Why did I wait so long to do this?”

A fresh coat of paint makes everything seem new again. It covers all of the imperfections, the scuffs from book bags and the scars from busy lives. Not to mention a whole new perspective when you change the color. I’ve chosen colors from a line called tranquility. Now that’s what I’m talking about. Cool, light, airy colors to lighten and brighten my home.  Two bathrooms completely transformed by a pale light blue. Love it!

I adore the sunrise. It brings hope of a new day. Yesterday is gone. The sun giving hues of orange and yellow on the horizon is the promise of the sun that is coming. When the sun peaks into the morning sky it gives birth to a new start. New mercy, new grace. It brings hope to me that today can be different than those that have already passed. I can’t change them or get them back. I can just move forward into what God has in store for this day.

I sense this is the year that God does something new for you. He’s heard the prayers, seen the tears. He knows. He’s also seen your triumphs and bouts of joy. He’s there. Through it all. There isn’t one ounce of pain that you have endured that does not have purpose.  And those joyful moments? Those should be turned into worship sessions!

His unfathomable, unchanging, relentless love for you covers your flaws. When you allow Him to, His love rushes in like a raging river permeating every crack, crevice, imperfection and scar. It makes all things new again. Fresh, abundant, thriving. You have to receive it though. It’s not enough to say you have God’s love. Don’t block all He wants to do in your life this year because you feel unworthy or ashamed. Those are lies from your enemy! God is about to do something new in you and for you. Do you believe it?

There is no distance too far that His love can’t reach you. He is in relentless pursuit of you. He adores you. This something new that He wants to do takes a little effort on your part. You have to believe. You have to take God at His Word and believe in the something new. I don’t know what it is. I imagine it is something different for all of us. A new job, a new friend, a new relationship, a new class, a new boss, a new neighbor the possibilities are endless.

We already have a new year. Let’s trust God to go over the top with new opportunities to spread the gospel for all of us this year! Let’s step out boldly in faith by receiving the love He is placing over us. As we become secure in that love the new beginnings in our lives will blow us away. He will make a way for you. He is reaching out His hand to guide you through this year. Accept what He is offering to you! Happy New Year!
